Rail picnic

A picnic party travels by log train on a bush railway, at Manunui in the King Country on New Year’s Day 1911. Picnics by rail were very popular in the early 20th century for school, church and workplace groups – including New Zealand Railways itself, which staged outings for its huge staff and their families.
