The Silver Stream Railway’s restored KA 935 puffs along its line in the Hutt Valley in this 2004 drawing by Allan Paterson. The K-class locomotives were made in the Hutt railway workshops between 1932 and 1936. The more modern KA version, the biggest steam locomotive built in New Zealand, was made there from 1939 to 1950. It was dominant on the main trunk line until the 1950s, when diesels replaced it.
