Nurse Maude (fourth from right) stands with a group of district nurses and their bicycles outside her Durham Street headquarters in Christchurch in 1914. Before cars and other vehicles became the most common means of transport, bicycles were used by various services, including police and the fire brigade. In Christchurch, Nurse Maude’s District Nursing Service was provided with bicycles by a donor. Sibylla Maude herself taught nurses who had not yet learnt how to ride a bike.
