The Salvin’s albatross has a pale-grey head and face, paler above the bill, which is also grey with a pale-yellow top ridge. Relatively large mollymawks, they weigh around 4 kilograms. This photograph was taken on the Snares Western Chain by the eminent ornithologist Charles Fleming. As well as on these rocky islets, Salvins breed in large numbers on the Bounty Islands, which are similarly steep, bare rock outcrops.
