Firefighters are among the emergency services called out at times of crisis, such as this bout of severe weather on the North Island’s central plateau in mid-2006. A long-distance bus nearly slid over a bank in the icy conditions. Passengers had to be evacuated, and the bus was stabilised by chaining it to three large vehicles, including two fire appliances.
