Shipping dominates international freight. In 2007 It carried 99.45% of cargo by weight. A tiny 0.55% was transported by air. In terms of dollar value, sea remained the dominant mode, carrying 82% of freight by value.
If the freight load is broken down into exports and imports, a similar picture emerges. By weight, sea carried 99.5% of exports and 99.4% of imports. The remnant carried by air breaks down into 0.5% of exports and 0.6% of imports. In terms of value the difference between imports and exports was still small. Air carried 15% of exports and 21% of imports. Sea carried 85% of exports and 79% of imports.
