Sophia Hinerangi – Guide Sophia

Guide Sophia, also known as Te Paea, stands by Te Tarata (the White Terraces) in 1885, about 18 months before they were obliterated in the eruption of Mt Tarawera. Sophia was the principal guide of the Pink and White Terraces (Ōtūkapuarangi and Te Tarata). She was from Ngāti Ruanui on her mother’s side; her father was Scottish.

Sophia Hinerangi was one of five born to Alexander Grey(Gray)and Kotiro. Two sisters,Jane Maria and Margaret.The two boys were bornout of wedlock so could not under British law inherit any lands or possesions. Kotiro was from Taranakiof Ngati Ruanui Jane Maria was my Great Grandmother and Sophia and Margaret my Great Aunties.
