In 1867 manufacturing was spread through New Zealand’s provinces, with Auckland the dominant industrial area. It had the most manufacturers (102), the most employees (1,041), the most horsepower used (1,165 – or nearly 870,000 watts) and the most capital invested (£246,400). It would shortly be overtaken by Dunedin, which had its manufacturing lifted by the gold rush.
