Medal-wearing Gallipoli veterans march along Wellington’s Lambton Quay in 1958. In the early 2000s some war veterans were still alive, but a new tradition had emerged, with families of deceased veterans invited to march in their place – wearing their medals on the right (rather than left) side of their chests.
