The service group Rotary set up the Riccarton market in 1989 as a fundraiser for local community groups. It raised about $1 million in its first 15 years. Most markets set up in the late 20th century were mixed markets like Riccarton, with a flea-market feel, lots of second-hand goods and some produce, and were organised by community groups to raise money for charity.
