Expensive and low-quality produce sparked repeated calls for New Zealand cities and towns to develop municipal markets on the English model, where growers could sell fresh produce directly to the public. When councils had spare sites or buildings, markets were sometimes set up – like this one in Wellington’s Wakefield Street. Later, Wellingtonians could buy from growers in the Jacob’s Place market, until the site was redeveloped. In the early 2000s a Sunday morning growers’ market developed on Waitangi Park, Chaffers Street.
