Australasian crested grebes are found only in the South Island, mostly on subalpine lakes. New Zealand dabchicks are scattered on lakes and ponds, mainly in the North Island. In autumn they gather in flocks on selected inland lakes. Australasian little grebes are thinly scattered on lakes and farm ponds of the North and South islands, but are mainly found north of Auckland.
