Mānuka shrubs dominate gumland scrub in northern New Zealand. Gumland vegetation grows on infertile soils that formerly carried kauri forest. Gumlands have been frequently burnt. Along with mānuka, they have a cover of Dracophyllum lessonianum, tall sedges and umbrella fern. They are a rich orchid habitat.
