Fruticose lichens are either upright and bushy or hang loosely from branches or rocks. Some New Zealand species resemble reindeer moss, a lichen that flourishes in arctic environments.
This species, growing on a fence post, is Stereocaulon corticulatum, common in damp, exposed places.
