Conservation Minister Chris Carter (left) and botanist Alan Mark stand next to the sign for a new conservation park that they opened on 29 March 2003. This 20,882-hectare park is on the Lammerlaw Range in eastern Otago. Narrow-leaved snow tussock (Chionochloa rigida) dominates the grassland in this rolling landscape. Historically most conservation lands in New Zealand have been in high, forested mountain areas. A major recent drive is to conserve a more representative range of habitats, including grasslands on the drier eastern side of the South Island.
