This view of the northern Pisa Range, Central Otago, in January 1969 shows severely degraded snow tussock grassland. The area has previously been burnt and snow tussocks have been replaced by a mix of unpalatable native species, mostly golden speargrass (Aciphylla aurea) and alpine fescue tussock (Festuca matthewsii). It is a ‘masting’ (irregular flowering) year for the speargrass.
