The Redbank Scenic Reserve near Macraes Flat has a typical inland Otago landscape. Tussock grasslands once dominated the eastern South Island, before European farming began. In areas like this most tussocks have been burnt off and exotic grass species sown – as seen in the distance. The flatter areas have also been ploughed. The remaining tussocks are mostly in the steep gullies that cut through this rolling terrain.
