On these sand dunes and sandy plains near Himatangi, you can see different stages of secondary succession. In the foreground, bracken fern grows on open exposed dunes with yellow tree lupin (Lupinus arboreus), an introduced nitrogen-fixer. They provide shelter in which māhoe and lacebark shrubs establish themselves (the light-green shrubland behind). In the distance is a mature semi-swamp forest of kahikatea and pukatea.
