Low-growing, moor-like vegetation dominates the Waituna wetland, 20 kilometres south of Invercargill. Cushion plants are especially adapted to growing in the cold climate and peaty soil. These raised humps of Donatia novae-zelandiae are normally found in subalpine areas.
