DDT spraying

DDT spraying

This elaborate machine was used to apply DDT dust to pasture in the 1940s. Since it was banned in 1970, the degradation of the chemical has relied on the activity of soil microbes. Crops and animals from areas where DDT was previously applied are regularly monitored to check that residues do not exceed permitted levels.
