Story: Acclimatisation

A trout (head at left, tail to the right) sits on the finger of a hatchery officer. The orange ball is the egg, which it is still attached to – and from which it will continue to draw sustenance until it starts feeding for itself. Most trout populations in New Zealand are self-sustaining. Hatcheries are only needed in areas that lack suitable spawning habitat.
