The Māori Land Court was established to identify individual owners of Māori land. Assigning individual titles to what had been communally owned land led to the rapid transfer of Māori land to Pākehā ownership. The court travelled to different regions to hear cases. These people are gathered at Ahipara, at the southern end of Ninety Mile Beach, for a Land Court sitting.
