Story: Wine

Vines spread across the landscape in the former gold-mining area of Bannockburn, Central Otago. The area is the world’s southernmost wine growing region. The first modern winemakers planted vines there in the 1980s, and sold wine to the developing tourist market. Growing conditions are challenging – Central Otago has hot dry summers, cold dry winters and extremes of temperature. The region has gained a reputation for its pinot noir, pinot gris and riesling.
