Story: Matariki – Te Tau Hou Māori

Puanga Whakataukī

Image
Temporary drying wall on side of river where people are standing

Ka hua ngā pua, koia ko Puanga
Puanga shines as a sign for the ripening of the miro and the running of the piharau

Whakataukī reflect the themes of Puanga:

  1. Te kaitahitahi o te tau: remembrance and preparing for the year ahead
  2. Te kairūri o te tau: predicting the weather
  3. Ngā tohu o te tau: food and preparation
  4. Te whetū taki o te tau: how Puanga can inspire us

This photograph shows utu piharau (lamprey weir) near Pungarehu on the Whanganui River, photographed by William James Harding between 1856 and 1889.
