In 2018 the New Zealand Sign Language Board published an official NZSL Strategy to provide guidance for government and other organisations regarding priorities for the promotion and maintenance of NZSL. In keeping with general language planning principles, the five priorities for NZSL described in the Strategy are: Acquisition; Use/Access; Attitudes; Documentation; Status.
