John Carew (Jack) Eccles was an Australian physiologist who worked at Otago Medical School from 1944 to 1950. Eccles was both a dedicated researcher and an advocate of the importance of research in medical training. He was particularly interested in neurophysiology. Eccles returned to Australia in 1950, and in 1963 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work on the central nervous system.
