Story: Arts and social engagement

Auckland artist Pat Hanly was among New Zealand's most socially engaged artists of the late 20th century. Since the 1960s he had used his art to raise public awareness about the threat posed by the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The 1981 (apartheid-era) tour by the South African Springbok rugby team to New Zealand led him to paint this abstract painting, 'End of the golden age', in protest at the tour and the way it divided New Zealand society.
