The Centennial Orchestra, consisting of 34 radio orchestra players supplemented by local musicians, was formed to give concerts in the four main centres in 1940. These increased public demand for a permanent professional symphony orchestra. Conductor Anderson Tyrer is pictured with members of the orchestra.
