Tuini Ngāwai (left) and her niece Ngoingoi Pēwhairangi, two great East Coast songwriters whose compositions have been used by kapa haka groups nationwide, are seen in this 1943 photo. They are taking part in the presentation of the Victoria Cross awarded posthumously to Te Moananui-a-Kiwa Ngārimu. The cross was presented to Ngārimu's parents at Ruatōria.
