Story: Classical and foreign-language studies

Maxwell Walker was first appointed to teach French at the University of Auckland for a year in 1901. His appointment was rolled over annually until 1908, when he spent a year at the Sorbonne (University of Paris). Walker was appointed professor at Auckland in 1909. His favourite hobby was lawn bowls and he was said to mark student papers in his bowling club's bar. His one published book was The art of delivery (1933) – on bowls, not French.
