Scientist Samir Shah holds a container made of Zealafoam – a plastic derived from polyactic acid, which is a substance obtained from plants. The idea is to develop 'bio-foams' to replace plastics made from petroleum. Zealafoam was developed by the Biopolymer Network, a New Zealand company. Shah works for the Biopolymer Network and for Scion, a Crown research institute which works largely with wood-based products.
