Story: Newspapers

Typesetter, 1957

Typesetter, 1957

This typesetter is working at the Evening Post printing works in Willis Street, Wellington, in 1957. He is setting blocks of lead type in columns, which are then locked into a steel frame for printing. From about 1970 this system was replaced by offset printing, which used a photographic process to transfer the printed image onto a flat metal plate. That process, in turn, was later replaced by computerised typesetting and digital printing.
