This memorial card for Eileen Duggan represents well the Catholic devotion that lay behind much of her poetry. Within the Catholic community she was well-known as 'Pippa' who wrote a regular column, 'The Catholic woman', in The New Zealand Tablet. But her reputation as a poet extended well beyond the Catholic world in the 1920s and 1930s. In fact during those years she was probably New Zealand's best-known poet and her five volumes of poetry sold well. Alongside her religious conviction and personal lyrics, she made an effort to capture New Zealand themes with poems drawing on Māori traditions and ballads about working people.
