This chart shows where the major cultural organisations received their funds in 2011/12, based on a survey of 236 organisations. The highest source of funding is from governments, both local and central, which provided 45% of the revenue. Next came the 41% received from other sources, which included earnings from box office sales, bar, programme or merchandise sales, hire or fee revenue, asset sales and interest from investments. Only 13% was received from private and philanthropic sources such as sponsorship from corporates, grants from foundations and private donations. In real terms there had been a decline in private support by over 15% since 2008.
