Peter Jackson's partner Fran Walsh convinced Jackson to make this impressive drama about a real-life murder in 1950s Christchurch. It was the first film in which the couple used digital special effects, and it launched the then-little known British actor Kate Winslet to world stardom. Heavenly creatures also convinced the major US production company Miramax to invest in Jackson's later work.
