Poets at a reading, 1956

Two historians, W. H. Oliver (second from left) and Keith Sinclair (far right), are part of a group of poets at a reading in the Canterbury Museum in 1956. Both Oliver and Sinclair were distinguished poets and commentators on public affairs as well as outstanding historians. Their versatility was characteristic of New Zealand intellectual life at this time. Shown here are poets (from left) Denis Glover, Oliver, James K. Baxter, Louis Johnson, Bill Hart-Smith, Tony Vogt and Sinclair.
