Nigel Brown's lithograph of the poet James K. Baxter suggests the extent to which Baxter became a prophet for New Zealanders. This was especially the case in the late 1960s during the last years of his life, when as 'Hemi', he adopted a Māori persona and became an acknowledged intellectual leader of the counter-culture.
