Wellington Teachers' College began teaching Polynesian studies from 1963, and New Zealand studies (including Māori studies) from 1968. Tīpene O'Regan (Ngāi Tahu) became senior lecturer in Māori studies in 1972. He was later joined by Amster Reedy (Ngāti Porou). O'Regan (left) and Reedy are seen on the Karori campus of the teachers' college in this 1982 photo.
