Koro Dewes, Tikitiki, 1965

Te Kapunga (Koro) Dewes (elevated at right) is seen at his home marae of Tikitiki on the East Coast in this 1965 photo. He is recording Paul Weka (third from left) explaining how kiekie (Freycinetia banksii) leaves are boiled in preparation for weaving. The following year Dewes joined the Department of Māori studies staff at Victoria University of Wellington. He regularly led groups of students to stay at Tikitiki marae, where they could experience a living and vibrant Māori-speaking community.
