Brenda Lawson and Philippa Baker pose with their Sports Hall of Fame certificate at the Westpac Halberg Awards in Auckland on 9 February 2012. The two had emerged as successful rowers in the early 1990s. Baker was the first to become a major force in world rowing when she won gold at the 1991 world championships in the lightweight single sculls held in Vienna, Austria. Then in 1993, at Roudnice in the Czech Republic, she combined with Lawson to win the double sculls. The following year in Indianapolis, United States, the pair repeated the feat. They also won a bronze in the 1995 race at Tampere, Finland.
