After defending his world championship sculling title against Billy Webb and then George Whelch, Dick Arnst defeated the English champion Ernest Barry on the Zambezi River by two lengths on 18 August 1910. He won £1,000. This account in the Hawera and Normanby Star gives some sense of the extraordinary environment in which the race was held.
