The huge crowds lining the banks of the Avon River on 14 October 1893 despite a cold easterly wind show the interest taken by Christchurch people in the annual opening of the rowing season. According to the Press this was the event 'from which ladies usually date the assumption of new costumes'. The day itself involved a procession of boats along the river, followed by races for fours and double sculls.
