Tomika Te Mutu was paramount chief of the Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngāi Tuwhiwhia people of Tauranga. In the 1860s he became famed among Europeans for the quality of his deeply incised chisel tattoo. His portrait was painted by artists including Gottfried Lindauer and Horatio Robley, and he sat for photographs such as this.
