Story: Coat of arms

Royal visit, 1963

Video file

This newsreel reports on Queen Elizabeth II's 1963 visit to New Zealand on the royal yacht Britannia. The highest flag it flew the was the Queen's Royal Standard of New Zealand, which was based on the New Zealand seal and coat of arms. The same standard was flown at the front of the tender that brought the queen to the wharf and on the car that took her to Waitangi. The standard includes the Southern Cross and symbols of New Zealand's economic wealth including a sheaf of wheat, a fleece, crossed hammers and ships. In the centre is a crown and the letter 'E' surrounded by roses.
