Thomas McKenzie, whose life was saved by Ruhia Pōrutu's cloak in 1840, later became a prominent newspaper proprietor. He remained a friend of Ruhia and her family. When he died in 1911 her cloak was placed over his coffin (seen here carried down Wellington's Boulcott Street).
