Classes of drugs

  Possession Supply or manufacture Allowing your premises or vehicle to be used for a drugs offence
Class A
methamphetamine, magic mushrooms, cocaine, heroin, LSD
6 months jail Life imprisonment On indictment: 10 years jail
Summarily: 2 years jail and/or $1,000 fine
Class B
cannabis oil, hashish, morphine, opium, ecstasy and many amphetamines
3 months jail and/or $500 fine 14 years jail On indictment: 7 years jail
Summarily: 1 year jail and/or $1,000 fine
Class C
cannabis seed, cannabis plant, codeine
3 months jail and/or $500 fine On indictment: 8 years jail
Summarily: 1 year jail and/or $1,000 fine
On indictment: 3 years jail
Summarily: 6 months jail and/or $500 fine

This table shows the penalties that applied for the three classes of drugs in New Zealand in 2012. The classification of drugs is based on recommendations of the Expert Advisory Committee on Drugs. An indictable offence is a serious offence that is dealt with by a jury trial. A summary offence is dealt with by a District Court judge, sitting without a jury.
