New Zealand artist Alexis Hunter moved to London in the 1970s and has been based overseas ever since. Her work has been exhibited in London, New York, Amsterdam, Lisbon and Sydney. This 1981 painting, one of a series entitled ‘Male Myths’, became a representative image for the feminist movement in the UK and was used on the cover of the Dictionary of feminist theory. Many New Zealand artists and other creative individuals have left for the cities of Europe, and many become expatriates.
