To be eligible to play wheelchair basketball, a person must have a measure of permanent disability in their lower limbs which prevents them from running, jumping or pivoting like an able-bodied player. Players' level of function is rated on a points system, from 1 to 4.5. A team cannot exceed a total of 14 points for the five on-court players. This means every player has an important role in the team.
