Story: Horse and greyhound racing

Little Mother

Little Mother

Australian-bred champion Little Mother (left) is hot on the heels of Sergio in a race at Whanganui's Hatrick Raceway. Easily the biggest earner of any greyhound raced in New Zealand, she had an unequalled record of 85 wins and 27 placings from 132 starts when retired in 2012. These included eight Group 1 victories, and Little Mother ranks alongside Misty Anna as an all-time great. Trained by Brendon Cole and Lisa Ahern at Palmerston North for owner Gordon Sciberras, Little Mother won all but three of her races over a middle distance (about 500 metres). She was noted for bullet-like beginnings, and her front-running technique often resulted in huge winning margins. She was Greyhound of the Year in 2010.
