Story: Swimming

Different strokes

  • Freestyle

  • Breaststroke

  • Backstroke

  • Butterfly

This table shows when various individual swimming events began for men and women at NZASA national championships. Early events were all freestyle, and butterfly was not introduced until the 1940s. There was a women’s backstroke event long before one was introduced for men, while the reverse situation applied for breaststroke.
